Hockey fans, guess what? The 2024 NHL season is finally here! The Outlet Sports Ventures will be providing Free Articles & Picks all Season! After what felt like an eternity of an offseason—seriously, it was both long and super exciting—teams have made some big moves. Some went all in to chase that Stanley Cup, while others just tinkered a bit, looking for that missing piece to complete the puzzle. But let’s be real, there’s a whole lot that can go down between game one and that grand total of 1,312 (plus playoffs!). So, let’s dive in and chat about what might unfold this year with four bold predictions for the 2024 NHL Season!
1- THE BUFFALO SABRES PLAYOFF DROUGHT ENDS!
The last time the Buffalo Sabres made the playoffs, Lindy Ruff was at the helm, and now he’s back for their first trip in 13 years! The team did take a bit of a dip in scoring last season, but I really believe we’ll see a bounce-back from guys like Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens. With a healthy Jack Quinn and a strong showing from J.J. Paterka, they could be looking at a top-10 scoring offense this year!
The defense is going to be improved with a coach that won’t tolerate poor play in their own end and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen showed last year he has number one goaltender potential. The stars are aligned for Buffalo to get to the playoffs for the first time since I was put on this earth!
2- WYATT JOHNSTON SCORES
50 GOALS!
In his rookie season, Wyatt Johnston netted 24 goals for the Dallas Stars. He followed that up with 32 in his sophomore year. Now, heading into his third season, he’s set his sights on 50, establishing himself as one of the league's top young goal scorers at just 21.
Dallas boasts one of the NHL's strongest young forward groups, and Johnston could very well be the standout. With Joe Pavelski gone and his 27 goals needing to be replaced, Johnston is ready to step up and deliver.
3- YAROSLAV ASKAROV WINS THE CALDER TROPHY FOR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
During the offseason rebuild in San Jose, the Sharks pulled off a late-summer trade with the Nashville Predators. They brought in top goaltending prospect Yaroslav Askarov to join the team.
Askarov is definitely going to be busy in San Jose, especially with a defense that tends to leave some big scoring chances open. But the good news for Sharks fans is that he’s more than capable of handling it. He’s likely to finish the season with a goals-against average under 3.00, making a strong case for the second Calder Trophy in Sharks history. Interestingly, the only other San Jose player to win it was another goalie, Evgeni Nabokov, back in 2001.
4- BOSTON BRUINS MISS
THE PLAYOFFS
I saved the Best for last! Every year people say the Boston Bruins are due for a drop-off, but it never really happens. Until now. For the first time since 2015-16, they’re not making the playoffs.
Even if Jeremy Swayman signs before the season starts, his holdout could turn into a bigger issue than folks think. The goaltending depth looks shaky, and the scoring just isn’t there.
This season, the Bruins won’t just miss the playoffs; they might not even be the first team out in the Eastern Conference.
