Former Indian cricketer Parvez Rasool, hailing from the Kashmir region, has stirred controversy with his claim that the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) is tougher than the Indian Premier League (IPL). In an interview with Wasaaf Jeelani of Bangladesh, Rasool remarked:
“I played five years in Bangladesh, Dhaka League. I rate Dhaka League tougher than IPL. I played IPL also. I played Dhaka League also.”
The interview, shared on Jeelani’s Instagram account two days ago, has sparked debates among fans and cricket analysts alike.
Parvez Rasool on Dhaka Premier League vs. IPL comparison
Parvez Rasool, who last represented India in 2017, made his international debut in 2014. During his career, he featured in several IPL teams, including Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Known for his skills as a handy all-rounder and off-spin bowler, Rasool has been away from the limelight in recent years. However, his latest statement has led fans to question his reasoning. The cricketer, though, has defended his stance with a detailed explanation.
“Tougher why I told you, because in IPL you get a contract, right? You get selected, and then whether you play or not, you get a contract,” Rasool explained. “So it depends on the team—if you are doing good. If you are not doing good in one or two matches, then you get dropped and stay with the team. But when you play in Dhaka League, altogether, there is a lot of pressure.”
Parvez Rasool highlights Indian Premier League's financial prowess amidst outrageous claims
Rasool further clarified that DPL franchises follow a rigid approach, often providing players with only two matches to prove their worth. Failure to perform results in the player being sent back by the third match. This structure, according to Rasool, is designed to minimize financial losses for team owners by not retaining underperforming players.
In contrast, the IPL offers players a full-season contract once they are selected, regardless of their performance. This financial stability ensures a sense of job security for players, which Rasool believes reduces the pressure to perform when compared to the DPL.
While Parvez Rasool has raised valid points, his comparison of the leagues has invited mixed reactions from fans of the IPL, a tournament often associated with global superstars like Virat Kohli and the highest standards of cricketing competition.
