On the Cubs’ side, they kicked off the 2025 season with a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chicago snagged wins on Thursday (10-6) and Saturday (4-3), but dropped the other two games 8-1 and 10-6. In Sunday’s loss, the Cubs got homers from Seiya Suzuki (two RBI; two runs), Kyle Tucker (three RBI), and Dansby Swanson (two hits).

This week, facing off with the Oakland Athletics, the Cubs came out on top with an 18-3 win on Monday and a 7-4 win in game two. In the Wednesday finale, Chicago put up four runs in the second inning and racked up 11 hits for a 10-2 victory. Seiya Suzuki was the standout, hitting two homers, with five RBI, two runs, and three hits. Matt Shaw chipped in with two hits, two runs, a walk, and two RBI.

For Friday’s game, the Cubs are starting Shota Imanaga. So far this year, Imanaga is 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA and six strikeouts in 11 innings. He’s got a career record of 16-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 31 starts.

The Padres kicked off their season with a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves. They swept the series with wins of 7-4, 4-3, 1-0, and 5-0. In Sunday's shutout victory, Fernando Tatis had a great game with two hits, two runs, two walks, and an RBI, going 2-for-3.

Next up, San Diego faced the Cleveland Guardians and kept their winning streak alive with 7-2 and 7-0 victories on Monday and Tuesday. In the Wednesday finale, the Padres scored four runs in the third inning and secured a 5-2 win, thanks to 10 team hits. Luis Arraez and Jackson Merrill each hit a home run, with Arraez getting two runs and two hits, and Merrill adding two RBIs and two hits. Starting pitcher Dylan Cease pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts.

For Friday's series opener over the weekend, the Padres are starting Randy Vasquez. In his first start this year, Vasquez didn't get a decision but pitched six solid innings. Over his career, he's 6-9 with a 4.13 ERA in 32 games, including 26 starts.

The Pick: Chicago Cubs ML +130

I’m confidently backing the Cubs. Imanaga has already made a couple of starts, delivering impressive performances in both. He began with a no-decision against the Dodgers on March 18, throwing 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, and issuing four walks. In his last outing, Imanaga secured a win over Arizona, conceding just one earned run over 7.0 innings. On the other hand, Vasquez excelled in his 2025 debut against a struggling Braves team, pitching 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and four walks.

Chicago has been on a scoring spree, tallying four or more runs in six of their last seven games. The Cubs amassed a total of 35 runs over three games during their sweep of the A’s. With those numbers, Imanaga won’t need to do much to secure a dub here!
